Ajo Middle School Educational Programming

:

Ajo Middle School follows departmentalized approach to instruction. The departmentalized framework prepares Ajo Middle School students for success in the dynamic and rigorous program of Ajo High School. This framework, designed to allow for students to receive instruction from content area specialists in the core areas of Language Arts, Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, also provides for instruction in Typing, Drama, Physical Education, and the Fine Arts. The Ajo Middle School program is also supported by pull-out English Language Learner intervention, Accelerated Reader, Accelerated Math, and other Ajo Unified School District instructional initiatives. Accelerated Reader provides Ajo Middle School students with multiple opportunities to improve their literacy skills and language acquisition. The McDougal Littell language arts text series provides additional instructional support to meet the needs of all readers, including students with limited English proficiency.

In addition to the Accelerated Reader and McDougal Littell literacy approach, Ajo Middle School teachers utilize various strategies to address different learning styles and needs in the instruction of mathematics, science, social studies and other curricular areas. The Ajo Middle School mathematics teacher utilizes centers and manipulatives to help our students grasp difficult concepts in mathematics, in addition to Accelerated Math computer based curriculum that allows for differentiation of instruction at the student's skill level. Professional development in differentiated instruction, literacy and mathematics programs, student engagement, and curriculum mapping is ongoing for all Ajo Middle School teachers in order to provide the best educational opportunity for Ajo Middle School students.

Supporting our teachers in the classroom are paraprofessionals and specialized Teachers for Special Education and English Language Development. If you or any one you know, would like to assist by giving one-on-one or classroom help in any content area, please contact the school office at 520-387-7602. Students can also receive additional support through the Homework Help program provided by Bi-Lingual Instructor Mrs. Stella Peterson on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at the Salazar-Ajo Library at 520-387-6075, and through the After School Program sponsored by AzYP (http://www.azyp.org/) at 520-387-3060.
