VolleyballThe Ajo High School Lady Raider Volleyball team ended the regular season with five wins and nine loses for the Varsity and nine wins, three loses for the Junior Varsity. Two Lady Raider Varsity players, Kayla Leon and Nikkei Sanford, made the 1A South All Region Team. Next year the team is looking forward to returning all players except for one graduating senior. Volleyball head coach is Henry Robles. FootballThe football team ended the season with a record of 5 wins and 3 losses. The highlight of the season was the thrilling, come-from-behind, double overtime, 40-34 victory over arch-rival Gila Bend in the Homecoming Game. Eddie Vega turned in an outstanding performance at quarterback while the running game was ably manned by Alex Flores and Bryan Runge. Junior Ortiz, who will return for his senior season next year, anchored the line while Gerry Espinosa led the defensive charge. Robert Moss, who caught the winning score vs. Gila Bend, was the leading receiver while Angel Netherlin, Kene Richardson, Eric De Leon and Isaac Manuel all put together solid seasons and provided hope for next year's squad. Football will be coached by Tom McGoldrick, Mike Seeley, and Moni Alvillar. Lonnie Guthrie is our team trainer. Boys BasketballThe Ajo High School Girls and Boys Basketball teams begin practice on October 27, 2008. The Red Raiders are coached by Brad Harvey, and the Lady Raiders are coached by Dave Emmers and Elizabeth Zinky. Regular season play for both teams begins with a home game against St. Augustine on Tuesday, November 27th. Come out and support our Raiders! Girls BasketballA Note from Coach Dave Emmers: I would like to welcome everyone to the Ajo girls' basketball program. Although I am fairly new to the program I am very proud of the accomplishments of last year. That is reflected by the increase in our numbers from 9 last year to over 20 players this year. I welcome your comments and suggestions to improve the program. Be sure to welcome my assistant coach Elizabeth Zinky. She has many years of basketball experience both in high school and at the division 1 college level. As coaches we wear many hats: leader, role model, disciplinarian, teacher, friend and counselor to name a few. As a parent and a fan of the girls you also follow rules. Be a fan of everyone on the team. Be supportive of your child. Respect other fans, coaches, players and yes, even the referees. The players will be expected to work hard, support their teammates, be positive and have a good attitude. We are working to create an environment where athletes can have fun and feel good about basketball. We will teach the fundamentals and strategies of basketball. We want the athletes to mold into a quality basketball team with the emphasis on team and not the individual. Student athletes will also learn many life skills such as teamwork, loyalty, organization, budgeting time, and setting priorities. Come on out to the basketball games and cheer loud and long. Have a good time and show your AJO RAIDER PRIDE. DramaThe goal of the Ajo Red Raider Players club is to involve students in theatre arts. It is an after school activity that allows students to explore dramatic arts as audience members and performers. The group plans to attend two professional performances in Tucson: A Raisin in the Sun and La Pastorala. Their own productions will include adaptations of classics Macbeth and Phantom of the Opera. Those interested are encouraged to join in on Monday afternoons. If you have an interest in acting, directing, or stage production speak with Melissa Zanot about signing up. New members are always welcome to lend a hand! |
